Exponential moving average

EMAstudied

Like SMA, but weights recent prices more heavily, so it reacts faster to new price action while still smoothing out noise.

What the numbers mean

9, 12, 21, 26, 50, 200

Same lookback idea, but the weighting decays exponentially so the newest bar counts most. The period sets how quickly older data fades: a 9 turns within a few bars, a 200 barely bends for one day's move. 12 and 26 are conventional because MACD is built from that pair.

  • 9 — about two weeks; the fast line for day and swing traders
  • 12 and 26 — roughly two and a half and five weeks; the pair MACD is built from
  • 21 — about a month; a common intraday trend line, the EMA answer to the 20 SMA
  • 50 — a quarter; the intermediate trend
  • 200 — about a trading year; the long-term regime line

How it is used

Favoured by shorter-term traders who want the line to turn sooner — as a trend read, as a moving support level in a strong run, and as the raw input to MACD, Keltner channels, TRIX and much else.

  • Price holding above the 21 EMA on pullbacks → a trend still under buyers' control
  • The 9 crossing the 21 → a fast momentum signal, used intraday
  • EMA slope, more than price position, is what most traders actually read

How it relates to everything else

An EMA and an SMA of the same length describe the same window but disagree about which part of it matters. The EMA weights the newest bars most, so in a sharp reversal it turns first — often by several bars — while the SMA keeps describing the older, calmer part of the window. That difference is exactly why the two get used for different jobs: the EMA for entries and trailing stops, the SMA for defining the regime.

  • 9 EMA crosses above 21 EMA → short-term momentum shift; the intraday equivalent of the 20/50
  • 12/26 EMA crossover → the same event MACD reports, which is what MACD's zero-line cross is
  • EMA above SMA of the same period → price has accelerated recently
  • EMA clouds, Keltner channels, MACD, TRIX and TEMA are all built on EMAs, so they agree with each other more than they agree with SMA-based tools

What to watch for

Turning faster also means turning on noise. Two EMAs of similar length will cross back and forth in a range, which is why crossover signals are usually filtered by a trend-strength reading such as ADX.
